Ocean Grove Junior Guard Program
Junior Lifeguards will begin the week of June 26 and run through August 10.
All practices will be held on Middle Beach.
Groups A & B (ages 12-15) will practice on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday from 7:45-8:45 and attend tournaments on most Thursdays.
Groups C & D (ages 6-11) will meet on Monday & Wednesday from 7:45-8:45am.
Ocean Grove Jr. guards train with lifeguards to learn ocean water safety, apply basic first aid, and develop a love for fun competition.
There are 4 age groups in our program. The ages are split up as group D for children ages 6-8, group C ages 9-11, group B ages 12-13, group A 14 and above.
Group D (Ages 6-8):
Jr. Guards in this group should be comfortable in the ocean, they do not need to swim in the ocean; however, they should be comfortable going in alone. Jr. Guard coaches will be in the water with this age group at all times. Jr. Guards at this age will focus on having fun, there is only one tournament for this age group so participants will practice doing beach runs, playing games and doing activities that will prepare them for Jr. Guard tournaments as they age up.
Group C (Ages 9-11):
Jr. Guards in this group have to know how to swim in the ocean. This age group is when Jr. Guards are first eligible to participate in tournaments with Jr. Guards from other towns. At this age, coaches will teach competitors the different events involved in a junior guard tournament, the gameplay of these events, and how to be competitive and show good sportsmanship. At this level, participants will begin to learn some basic life-saving techniques and basic first aid. Jr. Guards in this group will also get an introduction to the lifeguard equipment such as torps and paddleboards.
Group B (Ages 12-13):
Jr. Guards in this group must know how to swim in the ocean. In this group, Jr. Guards become a bit more competitive as participants are preparing for more competitive tournaments and a future lifeguard career. At this age, coaches will begin to create a more intense group while still having fun. Participants will be able to use equipment such as torps, paddleboards, and kayaks, and they will be able to learn first aid skills. Jr. Guards in this group strongly encouraged to participate in tournaments because it will help them become from friends with people they will be working with eventually both on their beach and others.
Group A (Ages 14 and above):
Jr. Guards in this group must know how to swim in the ocean. In this group, Jr. Guards are preparing for the next step, lifeguarding. At this age, coaches will continue creating a competitive environment where participants are able to grow both physically and mentally to prepare for a future lifeguarding job on the beach. Participants will be able to use equipment such as torps, paddleboards, and kayaks, and they will be able to learn more first aid skills. Jr. Guards in this group strongly encouraged to participate in tournaments because it will help them form friendships with people they will be working with eventually both on their beach and others.
